Anxiety disorders in dogs are common, significantly impair quality of life and respond well to appropriate medication combined with behavioural support — yet are frequently undertreated.
Dog anxiety medication is frequently resisted by owners who view it as a last resort or a sign of failure, yet represents a welfare intervention that can dramatically improve quality of life. Untreated anxiety causes chronic suffering — the dog experiences persistent fear, avoidance and physiological stress responses that impair every aspect of daily life. Modern veterinary anxiolytics are safe, well-tolerated and, when combined with appropriate behaviour modification, produce significantly better outcomes than behaviour modification alone. Treating anxiety from love and evidence rather than stigma is the welfare-centred approach.
