Research on pig cognition has revealed capabilities that challenge how we think about their welfare needs and the moral obligations of those who farm them.
The accumulating evidence for pig intelligence creates moral obligations that cannot be discharged by merely providing food, water and shelter. Animals that recognise themselves in mirrors, show empathy for their companions and use deceptive strategy are beings whose psychological experience matters in ways that minimum welfare standards fail to acknowledge. This research should inform regulatory standards, consumer expectations and the public conversation about what pigs are — not simply food-production units but cognitively sophisticated individuals deserving environments that engage their capabilities.
