Lameness is the most significant welfare and production problem in dairy cattle globally, with modern monitoring systems enabling earlier detection and treatment that dramatically improves welfare outcomes.
Lameness monitoring welfare is ultimately about shortening the time between onset and treatment — because every day of untreated lameness represents a day of chronic pain for an animal with limited ability to communicate discomfort and limited ability to avoid using painful limbs. Systems that detect lameness earlier than traditional observation enable treatment before cases become severe, preventing much of the welfare cost that currently accumulates during the delay between onset and human-detected severity. This makes monitoring infrastructure directly equivalent to pain prevention.
