Welfare Considerations

The standard hamster cage sold in pet stores causes chronic welfare harm. These small, solitary, nocturnally active animals evolved to run vast distances, burrow deeply, and forage extensively — behaviors impossible in barren 30x50cm plastic tanks. Germany has set minimum cage standards of 0.5 square meters; UK and welfare organizations recommend 1 square meter minimum. Hamster welfare reform requires both consumer education and pet industry regulation.

What You Can Do

Provide a minimum cage floor area of 1 square meter with at least 30cm substrate depth for burrowing
Offer an appropriately sized wheel — at least 28cm diameter — for exercise without spinal curvature
