Handling for grading, vaccination, and harvest causes acute stress measurable through cortisol. Slaughter method determines whether the transition from life to death involves prolonged suffering or is brief. Percussive stunning renders trout immediately insensible; CO2 narcosis and live slaughter without stunning cause prolonged distress.
