Farmed rabbits are kept in some of the most welfare-deficient conditions of any farmed species, with reform urgently needed.
Farmed rabbits endure some of the most severe confinement of any farm animal species. Wire battery cages prevent the hopping, jumping, and social behaviors that are fundamental to rabbit welfare. The resulting behavioral frustration is compounded by injuries from wire flooring and abnormal social isolation. Legislative reform requiring enriched housing is progressing in the EU, but global change requires consumer pressure and continued advocacy.
