Welfare Considerations

Heat stroke in dogs is a welfare emergency that causes rapid, severe suffering and death. The tragedy is its preventability — nearly every case results from human error rather than unforeseeable circumstance. Never leaving dogs in cars, exercising dogs in the coolest parts of the day, providing shade and water, and knowing the signs of overheating prevents most heat stroke deaths. For the rare cases that occur, rapid cooling and emergency veterinary care save lives.

Exercise dogs early morning or evening during hot weather
Always provide access to shade and fresh water outdoors
Know heat stroke signs: excessive panting, drooling, bright red or pale gums, collapse
Cool an overheating dog with cool water, never ice, and seek emergency veterinary care immediately
