The welfare case for piglet protection is also real. The solution lies in intelligent system design rather than choosing between sow welfare and piglet survival. Modern loose farrowing systems featuring escape corridors, heated piglet zones, and adjustable temporary confinement during birth can protect both. These systems require higher investment and skilled management but represent the direction of travel for ethically responsible pig farming.
