The gap between enrichment regulations and welfare reality on most pig farms is significant. Legal requirements for manipulable material are often met with inadequate objects — hanging chains that pigs quickly lose interest in — while genuinely effective enrichment like substrate for rooting is avoided due to manure management challenges. Technology offers partial solutions: automated dispensers, novel object programs, and even interactive screens can improve engagement for pigs in physically constrained environments. But technology cannot replace the need for fundamental housing reform. Digital enrichment is best understood as a welfare supplement for pigs in better-designed systems, not a substitute for addressing the root welfare problem of intensive confinement.
