Third-party certification schemes for aquaculture products are increasingly used to signal environmental and welfare standards. Understanding what these schemes cover — and what they miss — helps consumers make informed choices.
Aquaculture certification occupies an important space between consumer desire for responsible purchasing and the complex reality of farm-level welfare. Current schemes were primarily designed to address environmental sustainability — feed sourcing, chemical use, habitat impact — and welfare criteria were added secondarily and often inadequately. A fish certified as ASC-sustainable may have been slaughtered without pre-slaughter stunning, kept at densities that cause chronic stress, or treated with chemicals that cause pain. Consumer understanding of what certification does and does not guarantee is therefore limited. The most welfare-positive trajectory is the development of dedicated aquaculture welfare standards that match the rigor of terrestrial farm welfare certification, and increasing pressure on retailers to require these standards from suppliers.
