Selective breeding is a powerful and underutilized tool for improving farmed salmon welfare. Unlike housing or management changes, genetic improvement is cumulative and permanent — a disease-resistant line continues to confer welfare benefits across generations without ongoing management cost. Welfare-focused breeding programs are now targeting reduced aggression, improved stress resilience, lower spinal deformity rates, and better sea lice resistance. However, breeding for single traits without considering welfare consequences has historically created problems: fast-growing fish that are more susceptible to disease, or fish with heart morphology poorly suited to high exercise demands. Integrated welfare-aware breeding programs represent one of the highest-impact long-term interventions available for improving salmon welfare at scale.
