The opportunity lies in the controlled environment: water quality, temperature, oxygen, and photoperiod can be optimized for the species and life stage, eliminating the stressor variability of open-water farming. Sea lice and certain disease risks are dramatically reduced. The risk is that the same intensive land-based infrastructure that enables control also creates pressure for high stocking densities to justify capital costs. Fish in overcrowded RAS tanks experience chronic stress, competition-induced injury, and dominance hierarchies that harm subordinate individuals. The welfare outcome of RAS farming depends critically on stocking density management — RAS is a tool that can produce either better or worse welfare than net pens, depending on how it is operated.
