The sanctuary label is one of the most exploited terms in animal tourism and advocacy. Facilities that breed tigers for cub petting, keep bears for bile extraction while calling themselves rehabilitation centers, or allow elephant riding while claiming sanctuary status create a welfare credibility problem for genuine sanctuaries. Identifying genuine sanctuaries requires asking specific questions: Does the facility breed animals? Does it allow public contact with wildlife? Does it use animals for commercial performance? Is it accredited by a recognized welfare body? Genuine sanctuaries will answer no to the first three questions and yes to the fourth. Their mission is to provide lifelong care for animals who cannot be released — not to maximize visitor throughput or revenue from animal interactions.
