Sea lice infestations are one of the most significant welfare problems in Atlantic salmon aquaculture. Treatment methods vary widely in their effectiveness and welfare impact on both lice-affected salmon and the environment.
Sea lice treatment presents a welfare paradox: the treatment causes short-term welfare harm in order to prevent the more significant and chronic welfare harm of lice infestation. All current treatment methods cause some degree of acute stress — mechanical treatments through handling and physical removal, chemical treatments through toxicity, biological treatments through cleaner fish management. The welfare-positive trajectory is toward prevention rather than treatment: sea lice-resistant genetics, enclosed aquaculture systems that prevent lice entry, and submerged feeding systems that keep fish below the surface where lice larvae concentrate. Investing in prevention reduces both lice-related welfare harm and treatment-related welfare harm. The welfare of cleaner fish used as biological control agents is an additional ethical dimension that requires attention — wrasse welfare standards are still underdeveloped.
