Urban deer welfare encompasses the welfare of deer injured in vehicle collisions, deer affected by habitat fragmentation, and deer whose behavioral needs are inadequately met in human-dominated landscapes. Deer injured in vehicle strikes often survive with serious injuries requiring veterinary intervention or humane euthanasia — public education about who to call when injured deer are found is an important welfare provision. Population management through hunting in suburban environments raises its own welfare concerns including wounded deer who are not recovered and the stress of intensive hunting pressure. Non-lethal alternatives including immunocontraception, habitat modification, and traffic calming measures represent welfare-positive approaches to managing the deer-human interface where feasible.
