The welfare fate of male dairy goat kids is one of the most underaddressed issues in dairy animal welfare. Unlike male chicks in the egg industry, which have received significant advocacy attention and technological solution development (in-ovo sexing), male dairy kids receive minimal public or campaign attention. The killing methods used — often without veterinary training or appropriate equipment — vary in humaneness, and alternatives including cabrito meat markets, extended suckling for veal, and expanded dairy goat meat production are commercially viable but require market development. Consumer awareness campaigns that connect dairy goat product purchasing decisions with the fate of male kids are the most direct path to motivating industry change.
