Advances in wildlife monitoring technology are transforming our ability to detect, assess, and respond to wildlife welfare problems at landscape scale. These tools are becoming essential in modern conservation and welfare management.
Wildlife monitoring technology serves welfare in two ways: it enables detection of welfare problems in wild populations that were previously invisible, and it reduces the welfare cost of research itself through less invasive methods. Biologgers that detect physiological stress responses provide continuous welfare data on wild individuals, allowing managers to identify and respond to welfare-significant events including disease outbreaks, predation pressure, and human-wildlife conflict. Camera systems and acoustic monitoring that can automatically detect behavioral abnormalities scale welfare monitoring to landscape level.
