Cloud leopards are among the most elusive wild cats. Zoo populations serve a vital role in conservation while presenting unique welfare challenges.
Cloud leopards present particular welfare challenges in managed care. Their arboreal nature means flat or barren enclosures are wholly inadequate — complex three-dimensional climbing structures are essential. Male aggression during pairing for breeding has historically resulted in female injuries and deaths, requiring careful behavioral management and gradual introductions. Solitary and crepuscular by nature, cloud leopards benefit from environments that allow hiding, elevated resting spots, and sensory enrichment. Stress monitoring via behavioral observation and cortisol measurement is increasingly standard in well-managed programs.
