Elephant welfare in zoos is among the most extensively studied and debated topics in zoo biology. Their large brains, complex emotions, long lifespans, and extensive natural ranging behavior make traditional zoo environments fundamentally challenging. Best-practice facilities now provide large, naturalistic habitats with multiple companions, positive reinforcement training for veterinary care, and enrichment programs that engage foraging and exploratory behavior. Welfare monitoring using behavioral budgets, stereotypy time-budgets, and physical health metrics allows ongoing assessment. Despite improvements, many zoo elephants remain in facilities that cannot adequately meet their needs, raising fundamental questions about the ethics of keeping them in captivity.
