All rhinos benefit from large outdoor areas with varied substrate, mud wallowing opportunities, and browse enrichment. Positive reinforcement training for veterinary procedures — including foot care and ultrasound for breeding management — significantly reduces handling stress. The welfare of individual zoo rhinos is most compromised by inadequate space and inappropriate social grouping.
