Duck farming is a significant global industry with persistent welfare challenges from systems that fail to meet the fundamental behavioral needs of waterfowl.
Farmed duck welfare failures are concentrated around water access denial and space restriction. Ducks without bathing and swimming opportunities develop eye discharge and infections, dirty plumage that impairs thermoregulation, and behavioral frustration from inability to express their strongest behavioral motivations. Research consistently demonstrates that when given access to water, ducks spend significant time bathing and preening — indicating strong preference and high motivation. Welfare-positive duck farming systems provide water troughs deep enough for head submersion at minimum, with full swimming access representing the highest welfare standard. Consumer awareness of duck water access requirements is lower than for other welfare issues, making education particularly important.
