Mobility scoring transforms lameness management from reactive to proactive by making the invisible visible. Without systematic scoring, lame cows are often detected only when severely affected — by which point chronic pain and production losses have already occurred. Early-stage lameness (score 1-2) is treatable and reversible; late-stage lameness (score 3) is more likely to become chronic and result in culling. Regular mobility scoring by trained staff or using emerging technology enables individual treatment decisions and herd-level trend analysis. Farms that score consistently and act on results show substantially lower lameness prevalence.
