Black rhino conservation requires significant intervention in individual animals' lives — translocation, dehorning, health monitoring, and sometimes treatment. Each intervention carries welfare costs: chemical immobilization is physiologically stressful and carries mortality risk; dehorning causes acute distress despite use of anaesthesia; translocation is highly stressful and requires careful management. These costs are generally justified by the conservation benefit, but they require welfare-conscious implementation that minimizes suffering at every stage. The welfare of individual rhinos is best served by effective anti-poaching that reduces the need for repeated dehorning and capture. Consumer demand reduction for rhino horn — the root driver of poaching — is therefore both a conservation and welfare priority.
