Cultivated Meat Welfare: Eliminating Slaughter and Reducing Farm Animal Use

Cultivated meat is produced from animal cells without slaughtering the whole animal, offering potential to dramatically reduce farm animal suffering at scale.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Cultivated meat represents one of the most significant potential technological solutions to farm animal suffering. By producing meat from cells rather than whole animals, it could eventually eliminate the need to raise billions of animals in factory farming conditions. Current production still relies on some animal-derived inputs, particularly for cell culture media, but research is rapidly advancing toward fully animal-free production processes. Environmental impacts are also expected to be significantly lower than conventional meat. From an animal welfare perspective, the key question is whether cultivated meat can scale to replace significant quantities of conventional meat production.
