Non-invasive alternatives gather equivalent or superior data with minimal disturbance to individual animals. Camera traps, passive acoustic monitors, and satellite imagery are revolutionising conservation biology. Welfare-conscious research design now routinely selects the least invasive method capable of answering the research question — a principle embedded in the 3Rs framework (Replace, Reduce, Refine).
