Marine protected areas reduce fishing pressure and allow fish populations to recover. Their benefits extend to fish welfare by reducing capture stress and allowing natural behaviour.
Marine protected areas address fish welfare indirectly but significantly by reducing capture-related suffering and allowing natural behaviour and population dynamics to operate. Fish caught by trawling experience significant physiological stress from pressure changes, handling, and crowding. In fully protected marine reserves, fish populations show recovering age structures and natural social and behavioural dynamics. The cumulative welfare benefit of reduced extraction pressure across large ocean areas represents a significant potential reduction in fish suffering at scale. Expanding and enforcing marine protection is therefore both a conservation and a welfare priority. Consumer pressure for sustainably caught seafood from unprotected areas also reduces fishing pressure.
