Pork production is dominated by intensive systems that compromise pig welfare. Higher welfare alternatives exist and are growing in market share.
Conventional pork production confines pigs in environments that systematically prevent expression of natural behaviour. Slatted concrete floors, barren spaces, and high stocking densities cause chronic frustration, boredom, and stress. Higher welfare alternatives — including outdoor systems, deep-bedding indoor systems, and free-range production — allow pigs to root, forage, explore, and socialise in ways that dramatically improve welfare outcomes. These systems exist and are commercially successful, demonstrating that better pig welfare is economically feasible. Consumer demand and retail sourcing commitments are the primary drivers of uptake. Every purchase of higher-welfare pork represents a welfare improvement for the pigs involved.
