Sheep Pain Recognition: Grimace Scale and Clinical Assessment

Pain recognition in sheep is challenging because of their stoic prey-animal behaviour. Validated tools including the Sheep Pain Facial Action Units scale are improving welfare.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Pain recognition in sheep is notoriously difficult because their prey-animal behavioural adaptations suppress obvious pain signals. A sheep in significant pain may still stand and move normally until collapse. Validated facial action unit scales developed specifically for sheep allow more systematic pain assessment, and training farm staff to use these tools enables earlier intervention. Footrot, laminitis, dystocia, and post-surgical pain are all welfare-significant conditions that frequently go undertreated. Increasing farmer and veterinary awareness of sheep pain recognition, combined with accessible, effective analgesics and a culture of routine pain management, represents a major welfare opportunity in sheep farming.
