Fireworks phobia causes significant acute suffering in dogs and is chronically undertreated. The fear response to fireworks noise is not simply mild startle — affected dogs experience genuine panic, with physiological stress responses comparable to severe anxiety. Without treatment, phobia typically intensifies over successive fireworks events. Effective management begins months before predictable events: sound desensitisation using recordings of fireworks played at gradually increasing volumes, combined with counterconditioning to create positive associations, reduces fear responses significantly. For dogs with established severe phobia, medication is appropriate — a veterinarian can prescribe fast-acting anxiolytics for the event period. Environmental management including dense bedding, white noise, and escape routes within the home provides additional support.
