Transparent welfare outcomes reporting is one of the most powerful tools for driving zoo welfare improvement. When zoos publicly report mortality rates, welfare assessment outcomes, and behavioural welfare indicators, they create accountability to the public and enable meaningful comparison across institutions. Institutions with strong welfare track records have incentives to publicise them; those with poor records face pressure to improve. Currently, most zoos report conservation spending and breeding successes publicly but not welfare outcomes. Accrediting bodies are increasingly requiring welfare data collection and could require public reporting as a condition of accreditation.
