Shifting toward plant-based diets is one of the highest-impact individual actions for animal welfare. Understanding the evidence and how to advocate effectively maximises impact.
Dietary change toward plant-based foods is among the highest-impact individual welfare interventions, but maximising impact requires understanding both the direct effects and the most effective advocacy approaches. Reducing consumption of beef and dairy has the largest welfare and environmental impact per unit reduction. Fish represent the largest number of individual animals affected per kilogram consumed. Effective advocacy for dietary change focuses on positive framing of food choices, social norm change, institutional food environment improvements, and policy changes rather than individual guilt. Personal dietary choices matter and create cultural change but are insufficient alone — systemic change through retail, institutional catering, and policy is essential for population-level impact.
