Mental stimulation is as important as physical exercise for dog welfare. Evidence-based cognitive enrichment reduces boredom, anxiety, and behaviour problems.
Cognitive enrichment addresses a welfare need that many owners underestimate. Dogs evolved for cognitively demanding tasks — following scent trails, herding flocks, problem-solving in hunting contexts — and modern domestic lives rarely provide equivalent mental challenge. The resulting boredom and frustration contribute to destructive behaviour, excessive barking, and anxiety. Effective cognitive enrichment includes nose work and scent detection games (which harness dogs most powerful sensory system), puzzle feeders that require problem-solving to access food, training new skills (which dogs find intrinsically rewarding), and exploration opportunities in novel environments. Cognitive enrichment can be created cheaply from household items and can be particularly valuable during periods when physical exercise is limited by weather, injury, or recovery.
