Stocking density is one of the most important and modifiable welfare determinants in broiler production. At high densities, chickens have insufficient space to move freely, litter quality deteriorates rapidly due to high moisture load from feces and respiration, and air quality declines as ammonia levels rise. The welfare consequences are measurable: higher rates of contact dermatitis on feet and hocks, increased respiratory irritation, higher mortality, and reduced activity. Lower density combined with slower-growing breeds and enrichment produces the most significant welfare improvements. The Better Chicken Commitment density limit of 30 kg per square metre, while still intensive by welfare standards, represents a meaningful improvement over conventional maximum densities.
