Zoo elephants face significant welfare challenges while playing important conservation roles. Modern elephant management is being transformed by welfare science.
Elephant welfare in zoos represents one of the most challenging areas in captive animal management. Their extreme intelligence, social complexity, and physical needs create requirements that most facilities struggle to meet. Progressive elephant management has moved away from direct contact training using aversive tools toward protected contact systems and positive reinforcement. Welfare improvements are substantial when elephants have access to complex social groups, varied substrates, deep sand bedding for joint health, and extensive foraging enrichment. The welfare and conservation case for maintaining very small zoo groups is contested; large sanctuaries may better serve both purposes.
