Dogs have evolved highly social and cognitively complex minds. Mental enrichment is as important as physical exercise for comprehensive canine welfare.
Dog cognitive enrichment is systematically undervalued in companion animal care. Many dogs receive adequate physical exercise but insufficient mental stimulation, leaving significant cognitive capacity unused and motivation systems frustrated. Sniffing and foraging engage dogs at a deep neurological level; allowing dogs to sniff on walks provides richer mental engagement than fast-paced physical-only exercise. Training sessions, even very brief ones, engage attention, working memory, and problem-solving. Novel environments, social interactions, and varied challenges create the type of cognitive diversity that supports positive emotional states and prevents the boredom associated with anxiety and behaviour problems.
