As expanding populations cause agricultural damage, reactive lethal control creates pressure that may actually accelerate population growth through compensatory reproduction. Welfare-centred management involves understanding boar social structure: disrupting sounders through hunting may reduce the social inhibition on reproduction, counterproductively increasing numbers. Non-lethal deterrence including electric fencing and grazing management can effectively reduce crop damage with lower welfare costs than lethal culling. Where lethal control is necessary, welfare requires rapid death through skilled shooting rather than prolonged suffering.
