Many horses spend significant time stabled. Understanding equine social, nutritional, and movement needs helps owners provide genuinely good lives for their horses.
Horse stable management frequently creates welfare deficits by restricting movement, limiting social contact, and providing insufficient forage access. The contrast between the evolved lifestyle of a horse and the typical management of a performance or leisure horse is striking: where horses evolved to move continuously and graze almost constantly in social groups, many stabled horses stand alone for 20 or more hours daily with two or three hay feeds. Addressing this requires management changes including ad libitum forage, greater turnout time, social housing, and environmental enrichment that reduces frustration from movement restriction and isolation.
