Carp welfare in aquaculture is frequently compromised by extreme overcrowding in earthen ponds, where densities far exceed what fish can tolerate without stress. Water quality deteriorates rapidly at high densities, causing chronic sublethal stress affecting immune function and growth. Harvesting practices in many regions involve draining ponds, crowding fish in mud, and allowing prolonged air exposure before slaughter. Percussive stunning followed by immediate slaughter represents a significant welfare improvement over current standard practices.
