Intensive pond stocking causes chronic crowding stress and rapid water quality deterioration. Sorting, transportation, and slaughter are conducted without any consideration of pain or consciousness. The recognition of crustacean sentience in UK law represents a significant policy milestone that is gradually influencing industry standards in premium markets. Welfare certification programs for shrimp are beginning to emerge but are nascent. Ice slaughter, the current industry standard, is likely aversive; CO2 stunning or rapid mechanical methods represent improvements.
