Positive welfare measurement represents a paradigm shift in farm animal assessment. Traditional welfare audit systems focused primarily on absence of disease, injury, and mortality. The Welfare Quality protocol, developed through EU-funded research, was among the first to include positive behavioral indicators in standardized farm assessment. Qualitative Behaviour Assessment enables trained assessors to evaluate the overall emotional expression of a group of animals, capturing positive states including playfulness, contentment, and social harmony. These measures are increasingly incorporated into welfare certification systems. From a practical standpoint, farms optimizing for positive welfare indicators consistently outperform on productivity measures, making the welfare and commercial cases mutually reinforcing.
