Sea lice infestation is a major health and welfare problem in farmed Atlantic salmon. Treatment methods vary enormously in welfare impact and require careful assessment from an evidence-based welfare perspective.
Sea lice management involves choosing between welfare harms: the chronic suffering of lice infestation versus the acute welfare harm of treatment. Chemical bath treatments cause intense acute stress during application; freshwater treatments cause osmotic stress. Thermolicer treatments cause thermal shock. Biological control using wrasse and lumpfish transfers the welfare burden to the cleaner fish species, which face high mortality in sea cage environments for which they are poorly adapted. Integrated lice management that combines preventive strategies including snorkel barriers, light manipulation, and selective breeding for resistance with minimal treatment frequency represents the most welfare-forward approach available.
