The indoor cat welfare challenge is providing a safe environment that still allows expression of the full behavioral repertoire of a predatory, territorial, and cognitively complex animal. Without outdoor territory, cats need vertical space to survey their environment, hiding spots to retreat, scratching surfaces for marking and nail maintenance, and regular interactive play that activates their hunting sequence. Cats without adequate enrichment develop chronic frustration manifesting as obesity, overgrooming, and house soiling. The evidence is clear that enriched indoor environments can meet cat needs effectively — the barrier is owner awareness and investment in appropriate resources.
