Farmed eel welfare involves a tragic combination: the animals are caught from critically endangered wild populations as juveniles, raised in intensive conditions for years, and killed using some of the most inhumane slaughter methods in aquaculture. The European eel's ecological collapse means that farmed eel consumption directly reduces the wild population's ability to recover. Welfare improvements are needed at every stage: wild-capture minimization, humane rearing conditions, and pre-slaughter stunning as a minimum standard. The most welfare-positive choice, however, is simply to avoid farmed eel products entirely until both conservation and welfare standards improve dramatically.
