Sun bears are the smallest bear species and face serious welfare challenges in both zoo and bile farming contexts. Their intelligence and behavioral needs require dedicated management.
Sun bear welfare involves two distinct but related crises. Zoo sun bears require complex, arboreal enclosures with enrichment that allows expression of their natural foraging, climbing, and investigative behaviors — requirements that substandard facilities fail to meet. Bear bile farm sun bears represent some of the worst captive animal welfare situations globally: bears in metal cages smaller than their body for years, with open wounds from bile catheterization, developing severe stereotypic behaviors and psychological trauma. Sanctuary programs demonstrate remarkable behavioral recovery in rescued bile farm bears, but many remain permanently traumatized by years of captivity.
