The Five Domains model and positive welfare framework are transforming how we assess and improve farm animal welfare beyond the prevention of suffering.
The positive welfare framework represents a fundamental shift in how animal welfare is conceptualized and assessed. The original Five Freedoms set minimum standards to prevent suffering, but they described an essentially neutral welfare state — the absence of negative experiences. The Five Domains model recognizes that animals have positive emotional states too — curiosity, joy, satisfaction, social bonding — and that good welfare requires enabling these experiences, not just preventing their opposites. A dairy cow that can roam pasture, groom companions, and engage in natural foraging has fundamentally better welfare than one that experiences no pain but no positive engagement either. Positive welfare is now the benchmark for certification schemes and regulatory reform.
