Welfare Considerations

Research shows that hamsters housed in enriched environments with deep bedding, large wheels, and complex layouts show fewer stereotypic behaviors and reduced stress hormones. Forced daytime interaction causes stress. Owners should provide cages of at least 0.1 square meters of floor space, deep substrate for burrowing, and appropriately sized solid-surface wheels.
