Economic incentives are aligned with welfare here: unmanaged pain reduces production and increases mortality. Despite this, many routine painful procedures are still performed without appropriate analgesia in commercial livestock settings. Integrating pain scoring into routine farm health monitoring, requiring analgesic use for all painful procedures, and training farmers in pain recognition are high-impact interventions.
