Channel catfish is the dominant farmed fish in the United States. As domestic aquaculture expands, understanding and improving catfish welfare is increasingly important.
Farmed catfish welfare is affected by seasonal temperature extremes, oxygen fluctuations, disease management, and harvest stress. Summer heat combined with algal blooms can cause oxygen depletion overnight, causing mass mortality and severe pre-death suffering in oxygen-depleted water. Crowding during harvest causes acute stress. Disease management relies heavily on antibiotics and chemical treatments, with welfare implications from both the diseases and treatments. Welfare improvements include monitoring oxygen levels continuously, providing emergency aeration, reducing crowding stress during harvest, and developing humane slaughter protocols for catfish.
