Canine sports including agility, flyball, and dock diving are growing in popularity. Injury prevention and welfare-conscious participation protects dogs while enabling enriching activity.
Canine sport participation can be highly welfare-positive, providing physical exercise, cognitive stimulation, human-dog bonding, and positive experiences for motivated dogs. However, poorly managed sport participation causes injury through overtraining, inadequate conditioning, and inappropriate equipment. Welfare-conscious sport participation includes species-appropriate warm-up and cool-down, veterinary screening for musculoskeletal problems before competition, conditioning programs that match intensity to the dog fitness level, and honest recognition when a dog is not enjoying participation. Dogs that show reluctance, anxiety, or displacement behaviors during training may be communicating welfare concerns that require attention rather than override.
