Animal welfare progress globally is uneven but accelerating. Understanding the landscape of achievements and remaining challenges helps advocates prioritize and sustain effective action.
Global animal welfare progress represents genuine achievement: hundreds of millions of animals live in better conditions because of advocacy, corporate campaigns, and regulatory change over the past 30 years. Battery cages are being phased out across many markets. Gestation crates face bans and commitments. Fish welfare is gaining policy recognition. Alternative proteins are advancing toward scale. Yet the absolute scale of animal suffering in food production remains enormous, and progress is uneven. Low-income countries where most production growth is occurring have fewer welfare protections. The work ahead requires sustained pressure across consumer, corporate, and regulatory fronts while the transformative potential of alternative proteins is realized. Progress is real and continuing.
